UPDATE
Hanover, Va. - On 12/31/19, Jeffrey Mayo was arrested for the shooting incident involving “Penny” the horse, which occurred on 11/27/19. It was determined through the investigation that the suspect was hunting and had fired three shots at a deer while it was running. The third shot was fired within 100 yards of the complainant’s residence in the direction of the horse pasture. Thanks goes out to the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries for their assistance with the investigation. The owner has reported that Penny is still doing well.

HANOVER, Va. – The Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an animal cruelty matter that involved a horse being wounded. The incident occurred in the 13000 block of Farrington Road on November 27, 2019 between the hours of 10:00am and 8:36pm. The horse, Penny, was found with a wound on the side of her chest. The wound cause is undetermined but was found to be consistent with an injury from a gunshot. Investigators are asking for information that would help to identify persons in the area. Particularly, any possible hunters or persons that were practice shooting within proximity to the area. The Sheriff’s Office asks that all persons handling firearms practice safe measures and always consider what lies beyond your intended target.
