Message from the Sheriff
Welcome to the Hanover County website for the Hanover County Sheriff's Office. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to share our department with you and to give you an overview of our law enforcement agency. We hope that you find the information informative and interesting.
Progressive Agency
We are a progressive agency and all members of the Hanover County Sheriff's Office strive to provide the best law enforcement services to the citizens of Hanover County. The Hanover County Sheriff's Office practices the philosophy of community oriented and problem solving policing. Our motto - "Continuing to be a part of, not apart from, the community" - is vital to the valuable relationship we are fortunate to enjoy with our citizens.
Through planning, both operationally and administratively, frugal budget practices, and expert training, this department is rated as one of the highest law enforcement agencies in the state. We are proud of this achievement and it is through teamwork among our staff and support from our county that we are able to achieve this outstanding reputation.
Accreditation
The Hanover County Sheriff’s Office has been a fully accredited agency since 1998. Law enforcement accreditation is a voluntary process in which agencies agree to comply with professional “best practice” standards as defined by the accrediting body. Compliance with these standards serves as a commitment to professionalism. Our agency proudly holds the status of dual accreditation. State accreditation by the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission (VLEPSC) occurs every four years. International accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) occurs every three years.
The Hanover County Sheriff’s Office initially became accredited through the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission (VLEPSC) in 1998. The Sheriff’s Office received their first re-accreditation in 2002, their second re-accreditation in 2006, and their third re-accreditation in 2010. The Sheriff’s Office had their most recent VLEPSC on-site assessment on January 27-29, 2014. The Sheriff’s Office was found in compliance with all 187 standards applicable to the agency.
The Hanover County Sheriff’s Office initially became accredited through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) in 2003. The Sheriff’s Office received their first re-accreditation in 2006, their second re-accreditation in 2009 and their third re-accreditation in2012. The Sheriff’s Office had their most recent CALEA on-site on June 7-10, 2015. This assessment was a Gold Standards Assessment, which involved CALEA Assessors interviewing and interacting with members of the Sheriff’s Office, County employees, community partners and citizens. The Sheriff’s Office was found in compliance with all 410 standards applicable to the agency.
